Are you a morning person? Or are you best buddies with the snooze button? As a gigging musician, I often have nights where I get home really late. But as a homeschooling mum, I know that getting up early helps me to be more productive. And now, as a blogger, productivity and efficiency are like the gold dust in my pretty crammed schedule!

So in order to get some much need efficiency into my schedule, I’ve decided to take a 2-week course by Crystal Paine of Money Saving Mom.com. The course is called ‘Make Over Your Mornings‘ and I desperately needed to get radical on my morning routine!
And if you’re reading this, perhaps you need to get radical on your morning routine too. If so, you’re in the right place!
Why do we need to make over our mornings?
If you’ve had a morning routine in the past but have found that, for some reason, things are not working well. Then you’ll need to make over your mornings.
If you’ve had a big life event happen that has thrown things off their normal course, then you’ll need to make over your mornings.
I think that making over your morning is a good thing to do when for whatever reason, your days no longer flow. Or it feels like you’re not being as productive as you can be. This can happen anytime and that’s why it’s something we can do more than once. It’s something we can revisit whenever we feel the need for it.
My catalyst for making over my morning
I was never initially a ‘routines’ person. Before kids, I preferred to do what I felt like when I felt like it. Now, however, with kids, routines really help me to feel like my days are intentional and my weeks don’t just drift by in chaos (and often tears!).
And this is even more crucial now that I’ve started a blog and am working towards my next album.
I’ve found, that, after I come back from a gig I’m pretty wired from all the adrenaline (depending on the gig!) and I don’t get to sleep straight away. So instead of waking up at 5 am like I use to, I’ve been waking up at 8 am. That’s a MAJOR lie-in for this mama!!
If I wake up at 8 am, my kids are already up and generally playing with Duplos in their room with the baby (who’s 18 months).
Morning quiet time? I wish!! It’s straight into the thick of parenthood as soon as I open my eyes. Nappy changes, breakfast, ‘where’s your shirt?’, ‘have you brushed your teeth yet?’ and so forth.
No time for myself to just breathe and enjoy a moments peace or get a bit of work in. And I feel behind before I’ve even looked at my bulging To Do list.

I’m not a newbie
I’ve actually done this course before just over a year ago. And I loved it! It really helped me when I was in the trenches with a newborn. But now that I’ve started a blog, I feel like I’ve just been putting out fires everywhere and things are really slipping. So I’m going through the course again.
Like I mentioned earlier, this is something we can do whenever we feel the need for it. And right now, I’m feeling the need!
And I’m purposely going to be really strict with myself. If my alarm goes off, I’ve got to get out of bed. Even if that means that I feel jet lagged and need to have five espressos before lunch!
I’ve learned through studying habits, that you create habits faster if you don’t give yourself an ‘out’. Having a ‘no exceptions‘ attitude to your habit really helps it form a lot quicker. And from there, it’ll be automatic. That’s where I want to get to. An automatic morning routine.
