I wanted to give you an update on how my goals are progressing (or not progressing) as we come to the end of the first month of the year!
It’s gone by so fast, but it’s here!
OK, so if you read my previous post about my goals here, then you might have an idea of what I’ve already been doing. What I didn’t mention in that post was that I actually had a lot more than 9 goals for the year. You see, I have 9 areas in which I’ve set goals, but I also put three goals in each area. So in total I have 27 goals….!!! Can you tell that I’m an incurable optimist? Or maybe I’m just crazy!!!
Most of these goals are habits. Small changes in my behaviour. Which is why I didn’t feel like it was a big deal to have so many goals. Also a few of them are things which take only a little time or will occur only a handful of times a year (like goal number 5 below). So it wouldn’t be a huge drain on my schedule – just a case of prioritising.
So here’s where I am so far on my 9 top goals:
Spiritual: Write in my prayer journal daily.
I have not been keeping up with this one lately!! I’ve been really struggling to wake up in good time so that I have the time to read and also write in my prayer journal each morning. I started well, doing it about 5-6 times a week for the first couple weeks of January, but in Week 3, things started to slide! I started working later into the night meaning that it was more difficult to get up in the morning. That coupled with my baby waking up during the night meant that my mornings turned into survival mode!
Family: Pray with my husband at least once a week.
This one has been great! In fact my husband and I have been praying together 3-4 times a week just off the cuff! It’s been fantastic and has really helped both of us spiritually to keep things in perspective and put things before God.
Health: Establish a morning routine habit.
As with the first goal above, my morning routine has suffered these past two weeks. I know what I need to do to fix it though, set up activation triggers and follow those through. I’m giving myself grace. Habits are hard work. I’m not expecting success overnight. I’m happy just with progress.
Work: Update and revamp my singing website.
This one is coming along. I’ve got a new theme for my site and I’ve been updating the information to it bit by bit. I want to get this goal done by the end of this month, so that I can move another goal into it’s place!
Social: Have people round for dinner at least once every two months.
So far, we’ve got some people booked in our family calendar in February. So this one is on track I guess!
Home: Completely declutter my kitchen, living room and dining room.
I made a slow start with this one, but was kicked into gear by the Conquer Your Clutter Super Bundle. I’m currently conquering my paper clutter (help!!). My deadline for this goal is 31st March, so I’ve got a bit more time to bring this one in! Wish me luck!!!
Personal Growth: Write in a journal daily.
I’ve done ok with this one. I write at night before I go to bed and my track record was at an impressive 100%….until my pen disappeared from beside my bed. Now I don’t know about you, but I’m really lazy. Once I’m in bed, I AIN’T getting out again until mornin’!!! At least, not in winter when my electric blanket is on full blast and the rest of the house is as cold as a dungeon! So my perfect run ran into a hurdle.
But I have to say, comparing this to my prayer journal writing, it was easier to do because everything was set up for me to succeed. My journal and pen are kept beside my bed so that I literally just reach over, pick it up and write a few sentences. No sweat, no effort. Writing in my prayer journal however, requires me to get up out of bed and go downstairs to write. This is because my husband goes to bed a lot later than I do, and I can’t suddenly turn on the lights at 5am when he’s only had an hour’s sleep! I might have to think about how I can make writing in my prayer journal easier….
Financial: Pay off all my debt (except my student loan).
This one is shaping up very nicely! We paid off quite a large chunk of our debt in January and moved the rest to a 0% interest card so that we can pay off the rest of our debt throughout the year but without interest!! I’m so pleased about this!! Can’t wait to be debt free!
Fun & Recreation: Read 12 books this year (4 spiritual, 3 business, 5 novels)
This one is going quite slow for me. I’m currently reading Martin Luther King’s Strength to Love. I read at night before I go to sleep, but the problem I have is that reading in bed sends me off in no time at all!! So my husband will often come to bed and have to pry the open book off my drooling face at night! Obviously for this goal to happen, I need to find another solution than reading in bed!! Any ideas welcome!!
So that’s where I am so far with my goals at the end of January! I’m so glad I reviewed my progress. Just the act of doing this alone has helped me identify my problems and think about solutions that will help me go further next month!
You Can Do It!
If you’ve set goals for yourself. Do this too! Review your goals now. It doesn’t matter if you feel that you have done very well, or that you got off to a late start or that a review will be a depressing reality. A review is not an exam! No one is giving you a grade. It’s a simple exercise that will really help to give you clarity and even more energy to press on toward your goals!!
You’ve got this!!
