Christmas is in full swing in our house. Our tree is up. Our stockings are up. Festive songs are being played. We posted our Christmas cards. Our chocolate calendars are being eaten! Yes, Christmas has arrived at the Caleb house!
But this Sunday, I heard a really moving sermon that made me wonder, despite all of my festive traps and trimmings, if I was just too busy for Christmas?
What do I mean?
Well, the sermon wasn’t actually about Christmas at all. It was from Luke 12, about being ready for the coming of Christ. When Christ returns, will he find faithful servants waiting and watching? And the point that was being made was that sometimes we can say, “I’m just too busy right now to speak to X about God, or to visit Y at home or to invite Z along to church this Sunday”. But what if you knew – absolutely, irrevocably knew that XYZ would want to know about God, marry a Christian and raise Christian kids? Would that make you change your schedule? If yes, then why not change your schedule anyway?
I was challenged!!
Being Too Busy
It made me think that, in all the busyness of the festive season, was I making time for what’s most important? The serving love of Christmas? Am I too caught up in checking off my festive bucket list that I neglect loving my neighbours, my enemies or even those hard-to-love people?
It’s so easy to have a self-serving view of Christmas. How can I have a comfortable, relaxing, fun time?
But the heart of this season is about a love that was humble, serving and sacrificial. A love that put others first.
I was definitely convicted. And it has made me look at the next few weeks with a new lens.
How about you? Are you too busy for Christmas?
